SBB model integration with the SURE analysis framework

This report develops the SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, Swiss Federal Railways) case study of the SURE project, identified in a previous systematic review of SBB’s resilience concept. SBB is treated as a single customer and connection point to Swissgrid, although it has connection points throughout the country. This spatial flexibility of the power exchange with Swissgrid is currently not utilized systematically. Consequently, the key question of the case study is how the operational flexibility in SBB’s grid can relieve network congestion in the Swissgrid network.

The approach expands the grid security indicators developed for the FlexECO grid model of the SURE scenario assessment. This enables FlexECO to assess how improved coordination of the power exchange between SBB and Swissgrid will impact overall grid loading, redispatch requirements, and future dependency on local production. All quantitative results are computed using the original scenario pathways and shocks of the SURE modeling chain.

The results, insights, and recommendations of the proposed case study will be documented in a subsequent report. The case study results are highly relevant for the main stakeholders (SBB and Swissgrid) and integrate with the overall SURE project results as an added sensitivity of the pathway performance indicators.
